Proctoscopy: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Nov 20, 2024

What is the treatment?

Proctoscopy is a procedure wherein, the insides of a person’s rectum, anal cavity or sigmoid colon are examined. Haemorrhoids or rectal polyps can be checked by the use of this technique. Other diseases of the rectum or anus, like rectal bleeding and abnormal results of barium enema, can also be inspected using this. Doctors often use proctoscopy to keep the return of rectal cancer in check, if already treated once. The process may be slightly uncomfortable for the patient as an instrument is inserted into the rectum but it can conveniently take place in the absence of local anaesthesia.

How is the treatment done?

You will first be given medications to cleanse your bowel before the surgery. Tenderness of blockage of your anus will be checked before starting with proctoscopy. It is done by the use of proctoscope or rectoscope. It is a short, straight, rigid and hollow tube made up of metal or plastic scope. It also has a small light bulb attached at its end. This 10-15 cm long tube is lubricated and inserted in your rectum. Air is pumped through the tube to inflate the rectum. Some special tools may be used to remove growths or to take a sample of the tissue to examine further. The procedure lasts for 5-15 minutes after which the proctoscope is gently withdrawn.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

If you have been facing problems like haemorrhoids, rectal polyps, rectal bleeding or abnormal results of barium enema, you may go for proctoscopy. Also, if you have had surgery for rectal cancer, proctoscopy is a good way to keep its return in check.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Slight pain in rectum or anus can be treated by medications. There is no need for proctoscopy.

Are there any side effects?

You may feel pressure and cramps while the proctoscope is in place. Cramps may continue for some time even after the treatment. You may also experience rectal bleeding because of the insertion of proctoscope. There is nothing to be concerned about. It gets better after some time.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

You should follow the medications and instructions as provided by your surgeon.

How long does it take to recover?

The process takes 10-15 minutes to complete. You may experience discomfort for a few hours after the treatment but it gets better. You may resume your daily activities from the very next day.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

One appointment with a gynaecologist may cost about ₹1000- ₹1500.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The results of the treatment are mostly permanent.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There are no alternatives to this treatment.
