Skin lumps are the slightly raised portions on the skin. They are very common and may occur due to infection, insect bite, allergic reaction or skin disorder. They are generally harmless but in rare cases, they could be a symptom of skin cancer. They may be many in number or just a few, itchy or non itchy, big or small. The colour of lumps may also differ. They may be of the same colour as your skin or different. They may also be really hard to touch or soft and movable. Skin lumps generally do not need to be treated. They go away on their own. However, if you face discomfort for more than a week and your condition is worsening, you must consult a doctor.
The doctor will examine your lumps carefully and ask you about your medical history and lifestyle. Most skin lumps, caused due to bacterial or viral infections, can be treated with over the counter medications taken in the form of pills, gel or ointment. If need be, the doctor may remove skin tags or warts by freezing them. Cysts and lipomas may also be removed surgically. You may be suggested to go for a skin biopsy to find out if the lumps are cancerous, in case the doctor suspects of it being so. In this procedure, a small sample of the skin tissue will be taken from the affected area and analysed to find out if it contains tumour cells. If your lump is found to be cancerous, you should immediately go for surgery to remove it.
If you have been experiencing skin lumps for a long time along with pain and discomfort, you must consult a doctor.
Mild bumps on the skin can be due to the side effects of another medical treatment you may be going through. Consult a doctor before consuming any medication.
Some medicines may result in temporary nausea, headache, irritation or redness. There is nothing to be concerned about, these effects wear off soon.
You must use a mild cleanser to keep your skin clean at all times. Protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Apply a good amount of sunscreen lotion, of an SPF of at least 50, before stepping out in the sun. Consume a nutritious and healthy diet. Stay away from junk food, tobacco and alcohol.
The time period of recovery depends on the severity of your condition and the area that has been affected by lumps.
One session of consultation with a dermatologist will cost you between ₹500 - ₹1200.
The results of the treatment are mostly permanent.
