Symptoms Of Osteoarthritis
Last Updated: Apr 13, 2020
Stiffness often associated with joint pain. Having joint stiffness is quite normal while waking up in the morning or in prolonged sitting. It is also a considerable sign of OA. People with osteoarthritis feel better after doing the warming up exercises and starting their routines. When the person is inactive for a long time, he/she may feel severe joint stiffness that could be settled by starting slow actions like step-by-step walking, stretching etc.,
Tenderness.
This tenderness symptom is considered as discomfort when pressing down on the joint. Visible swelling in the joint area also includes with tenderness. However, this condition is more common in the advanced stages of osteoarthritis.
Loss of flexibility.
In the stage osteoarthritis, people will find difficulties in moving the affected areas of their bodies as earlier. Loss of range of motion or loss of flexibility will be due to the pain and joint stiffness. Range of motion is nothing but the degree to which the person can move the joints in the normal pattern. Say for examples, fully extending or bending the knee is its range of motion. When a person is affected by osteoarthritis, he might not be able to bend the knee as far. Loss of flexibility is a gradual symptom.
Grating sensation
Osteoarthritis may cause a grating or crackling sensation called “Crepitus” due to the affected joint movement. While roughening happens among the smooth surfaces of the inner joint, the sensation occurs. People can experience this sensation at any age, but it is more common in older people and osteoarthritis patients. The sound associated with the symptoms may be less audible or maybe louder for other people to hear.
Bone spurs
Local inflammation such as osteoarthritis, tendinitis is the usual cause for the bone spurs. Due to the inflammation, the cells are stimulated that form bone to deposit and finally leading to a bony hard lump or spur. Say, for example, inflammation of the Achilles tendon can lead to the development of a bone spur at the rear side of the heel bone which is called calcaneus bone. The extra bits of bone form around the affected joint.
Swelling.
Some types of arthritis may cause the skin over the affected joint to turn swollen, red, feeling warm to touch. This condition might be caused by inflammation of soft tissue around the joint. Initially applying gels, hot water fomentation will help to mitigate the swelling. If the swelling lasts for more than a few days, it is recommended to consult an orthopedician.
