Viagra: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Viagra is the name of the brand of a compound called sildenafil citrate and this is primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It works together with sexual stimulation to increase the flow of blood to the penis to help a man to get an erection. So this medication can be consumed by men who are having problems during copulation. Viagra can also be purchased under the brand name of Revatio. The chemical formula for sildenafil citrate is C^22H^30N^6O^4S.

A person needs to take this medicine by mouth as and when needed. It is advisable not to take more than 1 pill per day. This pill actually works after a man is aroused and it causes more amount of blood to flow into the penis. Sildenafil belongs to a distinct group of medications known as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. The main function of this drug is to allow a person to keep an erection so that he can indulge in sexual activity. However, this medication does not increase sexual desire. The desire to have sex depends on the personal prerogative of the man and on his partner. This medication is available in three different doses such as 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg.

How is the treatment done?

A person who has to take Viagra should carefully read the Patient Information Leaflet and talk to a physician to clarify all his doubts. Viagra is available in three different dosages: 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. A 25 mg of this medication is blue in color and is diamond-shaped. It has two markings –‘PFIZER’ on one side and ‘VGR 25’ on the other side and contain 25 mg of sildenafil. The 50 mg tablet has 50 mg of sildenafil and has ‘VGR 50’ marked on one side. The 100 mg of this medication has 100 mg of sildenafil and has ‘VGR 100’ marked on its side.

The dosage that a person needs to take depends on his requirement, if he has some previous medical condition and how he is responding to the treatment. This drug should be taken by mouth and it should be taken 30 minutes to a maximum of 4 hours before any sexual activity. However, no more than one tablet should be consumed per day. A person should avoid a high-fat meal as it may delay the functioning of this medication.

Viagra contains sildenafil that is used to treat male sexual dysfunction. It increases blood flow to the penis to help a man get and also sustain an erection.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

A male person who has been suffering from sexual dysfunction is eligible for treatment. A person who is having problems in maintaining an erection while indulging in sexual activities is eligible for treatment. People without any history of cardiovascular or kidney disease can use this medication.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

People who take nitric oxide donors, organic nitrites and nitrates are not eligible to take Viagra. Other people who are not eligible include men who cannot indulge in sexual activity due to any cardiovascular problems, who have severe gepatic impairment, who have had a recent heart attack, who had a recent stroke, individuals with hereditary degenerative retinal problems and also people with kidney disease.

Are there any side effects?

Viagra can cause priapism i.e. an erection that does not go away. Without proper treatment, priapism can cause permanent harm to your penis. Another serious side-effect of Viagra is a sudden loss of vision in one or two eyes. Your comprehension of sound may also get affected. However, the common side-effects of Viagra include back pain, muscle pain, stuffy or runny nose, rash, nausea, dizziness, abnormal vision and upset stomach.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

There are no such post-treatment guidelines. However Viagra does not protect a person from sexually transmitted diseases. So he has to take other precautions.

How long does it take to recover?

The time required for this medication to work depends on the medical condition and the personal requirement of the individual. It normally takes 30 minutes to 4 hours to start working and it also works together with sexual stimulation.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

A 25 mg of sildenafil citrate or Viagra is available for a price of RS 12; the 50 mg tablet is available for a price of Rs 18 while 100 mg tablet can be purchased for Rs 27.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Viagra allows a person with erectile dysfunction to get and sustain an erection. The medicine starts working after about 30 minutes to 4 hours of taking it. However it does not provide a permanent solution. A person having problems with getting an erection has to keep on taking these medications every time he wants to indulge in sexual activities.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Also known as the herbal Viagra, Panax ginseng, when taken about 3 times a day, helps to improve erection. People with high levels of lipid or with metabolic syndrome may benefit the most from this medication. Other natural remedies include Rhodiola rosea herb, the Dehydroepiandrosterone hormone that can be converted to both testosterone and estrogen, L-arginine, acupuncture and an extract from the bark of the African yohimbe tree.
