Allergy - Salmon Test

A salmon is one of the most highly allergenic fish species. A salmon allergy is an adverse reaction by the body’s immune system to foods containing salmon or salmon. The body’s immune system produces IgE antibody and histamine in response to contact with the allergen. The symptoms that can result from a salmon allergy can vary considerably among the patient right from severe headaches, eczema, abdominal symptoms, asthma to anaphylactic reaction. A salmon allergic reaction may indicate individual sensitivity to all kinds of shellfish and fish. The patients are requested to avoid eating all types of fish products and also to stay away from seafood markets and preparation areas.

No special preparation is required before salmon allergy test. Before the test, you will be asked about your family history, lifestyle and many more. You may be asked by the doctor to eliminate certain foods and medication before the salmon allergy test. You need not fast or restrict the consumption of regular foods and drinks before the test. you need to inform the doctor regarding the underlying medication or allergies or if you are on certain medication before salmon allergy test. You will be provided with specific instruction depending on your conditions.

A salmon allergy test is usually performed on a sample of skin to measure the level of salmon allergic skin reaction in the skin. The test is performed to confirm the presence of salmon allergy and also to confirm its presence during and after the treatment of salmon allergy. The test is an important tool to identify and ease the symptoms of salmon allergy and to further consult the doctor for further medications. By performing the test, one can confirm the presence of salmon allergy if the person is suffering from severe symptoms like coughing, wheezing, a breathing problem or chest pain.

There are two ways to treat salmon allergy test. Skin Prick Test – In this method, a small amount of liquid containing protein from the salmon being tested is applied on the forearm or back by making small punctures. If reddish spot forms or the skin gets raised within 15-20 minutes, that can indicate a salmon allergy.

IgE test – In this method, a blood sample is collected from the patient’s body by injecting a needle. The blood is collected in a tube and is sent to a laboratory for examination of the presence of IgE antibodies to protein from the fish being tested. A salmon allergen is added to the blood to find out the result.
