When my wife was in her 5th week pregnancy. We got tested homocysteine and it came out as 13. Since then as per doctor prescription she is taking Enoxarin 40 mg injection. After nearly 1 month we tested again for homocysteine and there was not much improvement (12.7). Why it is so? How long it takes to normalize?

Hi lybrate-user Homocysteine is an amino acid which is normally present in the body, to make proteins. And it is necessary for many body functions. There is a recent research that increased levels in pregnancy can affect the pregnancy outcome, like causing miscarriages etc And the way it causes miscarriages if by increasing the thickness of blood, reducing the blood flow to placenta. Enoxarin is a drug that prevents blood clots and blood thickness. It was given to reduce the blood thickness and improve flow to the uterus, and not to reduce the homocysteine level I would like to know why it was tested for your wife in the first place. Did she have any prior miscarriages? Is there family history of excess homocysteine? Do speak to your obstetrician and get your doubts cleared. Hope this helps Wishes for a safe and healthy pregnancy and baby
