Good morning Dr. My wife is 26 years old now, and she is pregnant for 13 weeks now. My friend suggested NT scan is good at this point in time to know the internal structure of baby and any abnormalities as well. Can you please suggest how effective is that scan. What do you suggest is it plain NT scan or NT scan with blood test. What could be the accuracy of the report. Thank you in advance. Regards, Satish.

I belong to the old school who believed in simple tests like routine ultrasound and if suspected, amniocentesis to be done to confirm I will not suggest any high profile tests during pregnancy unless the woman has bad obs history with defective babies.

NB/NT (Level 1) scan is one of the two most important USGs to be done during a pregnancy, the other being an anomaly (Level 2) scan at 18-20 weeks. Combined with the dual test, it has almost 90% of detecting genetic defects in the baby.
