Dear doctor My wife aged 59 years is working for a nationalized bank where work load is heavy. Further she has sedentary life because after her hectic work she prefers to take bed rest. For past two years she is checking her hbA1c and is constantly 6.2%. How best she can try to get less than 6%. There is no walking or exercises so far she has by and large stopped taking direct sugar that is coffee without sugar, no sweets from shops. Is there any modification suggested. Hope 6.2% is not alarming and has good control.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. HbA1c% 6.2 shows she is pre-diabetic, which means if care is not taken, she may develop diabetes in the near future. Could be months to a yea or so. Fortunately in this situation by adapting a modified lifestyle one can prevent or delay progressing to overt diabetes. Modified lifestyle means :1) Taking balanced but restricted diet, avoiding sweets, deep fried foods, pastries, junk foods, colas, bakery items and foods made from maida. 2) Consuming more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. 3) Always using whole grain flour for chapati and roti. 4) Refraining form alcohol and smoking. 5) Maintaining near normal body weight with regular exercise for over 1 hour every day. Brisk walking is the best option. 6) Waist line should be <80 cms and BMI should be <23 kgs/M2. By following above guidelines, T2 DM can be prevented. Thanks.
