I have taken allopathic medication for almost two months my uric acid got 6.5 to 3.8. But after about a week I got it tested again when the medicine were stopped, it was 7.2!(I was on a normal diet no heavy protein) Right now I am taking ayurvedic medicine. But the I think the gout in my left ankle sometimes almost goes away and sometimes comes back. Why does my uric acid increases as soon as the medicine are stopped? What is the permanent cure? Should I get any other particular tests done? Please help.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. In many persons serum uric acid can be high, but there is no problem of joint pains. In general population a fairly large number of people have high uric acid. But only a very few have gouty arthritis. Main reason is said to be a derangement in purine metabolism leading to increased uric acid level. In gouty arthritis crystals of uric acid get deposited around the small joints. This is a recurring problem. It can not be completely eliminated. Treatment has to be continued for a long time. Stoppage may increase the level. Person has to avoid foods like red meat, organ meat, sea foods like sardines, scallops, herring, salmon, mussels and haddock. Reduce the protein intake. During acute attack NSAIDs may be required. Thanks.
