I have a relative who is 38 years old and seems to be suffering from bipolar disorder. He is not ready to visit any doctor and day by day his condition is worsening. Can you please guide us if you could be of any help in this case.

Dear lybrate-user, Usually bipolar disorder persons don't like to be treated. That is only in manic phase. In depressive phase Saurabh wants to feel better and he may want treatment though you may find him fine. Mostly in the normal phase, psychiatrists counsell him for regular long term mood stabilisers. As a relative, you can consult the psychiatrist who has diagnosed him as bipolar - even without Saurabh. He may give you some suggestions. Or, wait for the phase to change by itself when he will be co operative. Alternately, if he is suicidal or homicidal, you can seek the help of magistrate to treat him without his consent.
