Epididymis is a specialised convoluted tube which transfers sperms from testes to the vas deferens, the channel responsible for taking sperms to the urethra and finally into the ejaculate. An inflammation of epididymis is termed as epididymitis. Common reasons are infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and E coli while trauma or obstruction to the path of urine causing urine reflux are other common causes. It is commonly associated with inflammation of the testes as well. The diagnosis is clinical, and assisted by investigations such as ultrasonography. Treatment required course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications and should be strictly carried out under medical supervision. An uncomplicated case typically takes 5 to up to 10 days for resolution of symptoms. Since there are other, potentially serious, acute diseases of testes, such as torsion testis, which may have a similar presentation, a medical opinion should be taken immediately in case of testicular pain.
