Schizophrenia is a very complex disease and to as large extent it is a permanent condition with improving functionality if you combine medication and therapy. Compliance to prescriptions is very critical for improvement. Schizophrenia can be a very crippling disease, if treatment is tampered with by amateurs or by lay people. You must strictly follow doctor?s instructions. If you push the expectation on him at this juncture, you may reverse all the benefits, inadvertently. Instead of worrying about changing medication, I recommend that you put him on some counseling along with the medication. This will help him develop coping skills that will stand him in good stead. Medication may be reduced, subject to certain conditions, but if you are thinking that he could be taken off of it, I seriously doubt that. The counselor will put him on some Cognitive Behavior Modification program and according to the improvement may suggest review of the medication with the psychiatrist. Now that is the way to go about this. Please do not even suggest to your son about reducing medication in any form. Let it come from the professional, ideally. You may use alternative as an adjunct and strictly recognized approaches only. All psychotropic drugs have side-effects, some less and others more. ECT is used as a last resort and for severe conditions too. He does not seem to be there as yet.
