My girlfriend's brother is suffering from schizophrenia. Now my parents are worried if this disease can pass on to my future kids if I marry my girlfriend. My fiance is perfectly healthy and does not show any symptom of any disease. I have 2 questions here, can schizophrenia pass on to my kids if I get married to my gf? Is there any medical test which can be done to check if my gf is a carrier of this gene/disease?

Dear lybrate-user, It is very nice of you for planning to get married to your girlfriend. Though schizophrenia is not exactly hereditary, it runs in families. If your family does not have any history of any mental illness among your blood relatives, her genes may not manifest much in your children. Apart from her brother, are there any of her blood relatives who is living with schizophrenia? If none, then also the chances are very little. Unfortunately, we don't have any blood or x ray or other tests to find out schizophrenia, at present. There are researches going on. Soon we will get it for day today practice.
