Small rodents and other wild animals. Small rodents like squirrels, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, chipmunks, rats, and mice) and lagomorphs including rabbits and hares are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to transmit rabies to humans. Rat rabies has been reported from some Asian countries but is extremely rare. It is not necessary to take PEP in bite cases by house rats. However, it is prudent to take PEP in consultation with an infectious disease physician when bitten by wild rats/rodents.
