My father is a 55 years old male he is suffering with schizophrenia tablets used are psydyl-3 (risperidone 3 mg and trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride 2 mg) and olanzapine-10. He is feeling dizzy whole day. He is sleeping for more than 15 hrs.

Medicine which are given for schizo related disorder are generally sedatives and take little time in adjusting with the body and duration of adjustment varies person to person however if he have taken medicine for long and yet sleepy then you can definitely get in touch with psychiatrist and get the medicine re-adjusted.

He should not sleep that much. Itis time you visited your doctor again and inform him of this development. Schizophrenia can be a very crippling disease, if treatment is tampered with by amateurs or by lay people. You must strictly follow doctor?s instructions. If you push the expectation on him, you may reverse all the benefits, inadvertently. Instead of worrying about changing medication, I recommend that you put him on some counseling along with the medication. This will help him develop coping skills that will stand him in good stead. Medication may be reduced, subject to certain conditions, but if you are thinking that he could be taken off of it, I seriously doubt that. The counselor will put him on some cognitive behavior modification program and according to the improvement may suggest review of the medication with the psychiatrist. Now that is the way to go about this. Please do not even suggest to your dad about reducing medication in any form. Let it come from the professional, ideally.
