Meningococcal vaccine refers to any of the vaccines used to prevent infection by neisseria meningitidis. Different versions are effective against some or all of the following types of meningococcus: a, b, c, w-135, and y. The vaccines are between 85 and 100% effective for at least two years. All 11 to 12-year-olds should be vaccinated with a meningococcal conjugate vaccine, with a booster dose given at 16 years old. All teens may also be vaccinated with a serogroup b meningococcal vaccine, preferably at 16 through 18 years old. The menb vaccine will protect your baby against infection by meningococcal group b bacteria, which are responsible for more than 90% of meningococcal infections in young children.
