I took memantine for 3 months-2 months on 20 mg. It was prescribed off label for bipolar 2 disorder. I stopped taking it because I noticed some odd thinking patterns and confusing or forgetting names of people I know even genders. For example, I thought of a female name when I saw my male neighbor. My question is will my brain recover now that I don't take it anymore or does off label use of memantine cause long term cognitive damage. Thank you very much. Best regards.

Dear Marjira, Memantine is a cognitive enhancer. It would not caused your memory problems. There could be other causes for your memory problems - may be, a relapse of bipolar 2 itself. Anyway the benefit of memantine, you will lose if stopped using it. It will not be in your brain more than 80 hours.
