Can ofloxacin 100 mg be given to 3 years old kid. On top of its cover (cipla company) it is written "it may cause low sugar and mental health related side effects" is it true? My kid have been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonitis. She had iv antibiotic advent 450 and clarithromycin oral syrup for 10 days. Doctor again prescribed ofloxacin 100 twice daily for 7 days. Is that drug safe since on its cover it states it has side effects.

Hi lybrate-user, from the history stated by you it's noted that your kid has recent lrti and was treated with iv/oral antibiotics. On clinical examination respiratory signs might not have well resolved and reports might not have normalised. That might be the reason doctor might have added ofloxacin for your kid. Usually as a first line drug this category of drugs are not used in kids due to certain occasional risk factors. But as stated by you, that are not the common ones. And in any situation we will look for benefits over risk .if it outweigh risks it's used in particular situations. And for your information usually this risks mentioned are noted which may occur in 1 in 10lakhs and all during studies. It may not happen at all. All things we do in our practical life has risks like that. Example is once we travel in vehicle chance of accident is there. But we don't consider it boz it's rare and less likely considering the help we get, especially if we are traveling safely.in such way usually your practitioner will prescribe your child in a safe way not to harm them but to help. So if warranted ,not be apprehensive to give the medication prescribed to your child.

For short term use ofloxacin is fine. It is one of the medicine to treat pneumonitis. Do not look at the label and get panic just follow your doctors advice thank you.
