My mother is 76 years old and taking medicines for diabetes, bp and thyroid for last 8-9 years. She is currently taking (1)-tab olmesartan 20 mg for bp (2)-tab thyroxine 25 for hypothyroidism (3)-tab metformin sr 850 mg -1bd and tab ozomet vg-2 before lunch for diabetes now although her bp and thyroid tests are normal but her fasting sugar level remains around 135 -140 and post meals sugar level remains around 280-290. Please suggest suitable medicines.

Ms. lybrate-user, we need to do a detailed analysis such as hba1c, lft, kft, and urine spot p/c ratio. Current medicine is not going to be effective. There are other oral drugs which might be given a trial. If it works, then we might continue with it. Otherwise we need to put her on insulin for 2 to 3 months. Once sugar are under control, we can gradually taper off insulin and continue with oral therapy. One aspect is quite clear, current medicine is not working for her and short course of insulin will help you in long term.
