Marrying in blood relations should be avoided. Consanguineous couples are at high risk of conceiving a child with a genetic disorder. It produces an increase of the various types of genetic disorders such as birth defects, mental retardation, deafness and blindness. It can create trouble for coming offspring so it is better to avoid it and prevent your up coming generation from diseases. Genetic counselling from a genetic counsellor should be done before the marriage, to find out the diseases that r running in the families and based on which risk of child being born with the same disease is calculated. There are no mandatory or standard pre-marital tests. However, it is a good idea to do some tests for anaemia, thyroid or sugar problems to check your general well being. Other tests would include blood grouping and rh factor, screening for thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis and aids.
