My son is 20 years old and he has been suffering from a severe sinus infection. What is bothering me more is his loss of smell. Doctor said that he has developed a condition called anosmia. It is not a serious condition as per the doctor but still I want to be clear what it is and how is anosmia treated?

Anosmia generally goes away on its own if it is caused due to cold, allergy, and sinus infection. Your smell after you recover from these infections will return back but if it does not, consult your doctor. Other treatment areas include - decongestants, nasal sprays, less exposure to nasal irritants and allergens, smoking cessation, antihistamines, antibiotics for treating certain bacterial infections, loss of smell due to any obstruction or blockage in the nose can be treated. There are procedures involved to remove blockage such as clearing the sinus infections, nasal polyps, and straightening of the nasal septum. If anosmia happens in people with older age, it can be permanent and cannot be treated and they can lose their sense of smell permanently. Also in case of congenital anosmia, a person will lose smell permanently because there is no treatment available as if now for this.
