Can blood be seen in occult stool test if we have irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease? Is it dangerous or curable? What are the treatment options for this? Or is it cancer if blood is seen in stool in the occult stool test. I am having loose stools as soon as I eat with stomach cramping, pain and gurgling sound, with gas and burping as soon as I eat. But I feel hungry normally and no vomiting. This is present for the past 3 weeks and not improving with medicines. What should I do? Please reply soon. I am worried.

Hi lybrate-user, I am so sorry to hear that. It must be concerning. Occult blood test is as the name suggests, to find occult / hidden blood. Usually irritable bowel does not cause occult blood positive but inflammatory bowel disease can cause. At this point I am not yet able to diagnose if you are suffering from any of those. Both can be properly managed with medicine. In lower gut cancers like colon cancers and some infections of gut also occult blood can be positive. Given your young age it is less likely to have cancer. All your symptoms are pretty non specific that means it has a long list of possibilities to cause as such symptoms. Our job is to ask you a series of question to figure out which one this could be and this might need tests or treatment. I have to ask you a lot more questions to get to the bottom of your issue to suggest you a solution. I understand you are worried. I would suggest you to make sure you are using a oral rehydration salt (ors) and plenty of fluid to combat dehydration till you get proper diagnosis and treatment. If you consider a consultation with me is helpful, then feel free to schedule one with me. Good luck and I hope you get well soon. Take care.
