I am 29 years old. Today morning I checked my sugar just after waking up and my blood sugar showed 375! I am shocked. I am little over weight and currently from the past few months I am going through office tensions and work. I do not have the urination problem but I am getting irritated in a short while. I am also getting a slight pain near to my liver. The last time I checked was 2 months ago and it was 140. Yesterday I had an unusual diet for dinner at a party which included white rice and other junk food. Please advice. I am not find of sweets and avoid all sorts of chocolates and sugar. The only source of sugar is tea which I consume twice a day. My diet basically includes margarine and white bread for breakfast, 4 chapatis for lunch and generally 3 chapatis for dinner or sometimes white rice. In the evening I tend to have 4 slices of bread with amul lite. Please help. Is it because of the stress and the bad dinner last night or is my sugar gone for a toss. Or, should I test again in a couple of days?

Hi Mr. lybrate-user, 1) Fasting blood glucose of 375 is high. But you had an increased carbohydrate food intake yesterday, so that could be a cause. But your fasting blood glucose 2 months back was also high. For good diabetes control Fasting blood glucose should be < 110, 2 hour post prandial (post meal) blood glucose should be < 170. 2) But you did not mention HbA1C result. It is a blood test which gives your average blood glucose level over the last 3 months. For your age, the value should be < 6.5% if you are aiming for good diabetes control. 3) I also notice that your diet has mostly carbohydrates. Bread, chapati, rice, pasta, noodles, potatoes, sweets, etc all have carbohydrates. If you want good diabetes control you should reduce your carbohydrate intake to 1/4 of your total meal. Take brown rice, brown bread, whole wheat rotis etc. Avoid white bread/maida items etc. Avoid sweets and junk food. Increase vegetables and fruits (apples, pears, papaya, mosambi, orange etc) in your diet. Vegetables and fruits should form 1/2 portion of your diet. The rest 1/4 should be formed of proteins (meat, dals, eggs etc) and very small percent should be of fat. 4) I also notice that you are about 100 kg weight. Please exercise atleast 1 hour /day. Start slow and increase the duration and intensity. Please see a cardiologist for fitness to exercise if you have never exercised before. 5) Try not to worry, as stress can also increase your blood sugars. Practise meditation if possible. 6) You are still very young and I would like you to lead a happy and healthy life without complications. So please take care of your health. The mantra to diabetes control is good diet + exercise + medicines. Hope this helps Good luck Thank you.
