Neisseria Gonorrhoeae is a human pathogen that is responsible for sexually transmitted diseases (STD) gonorrhea. The gonococcal infection usually occurs in the lower or upper tract, ophthalmic area, pharynx, bloodstream, and rectum. Men and women who are sexually active are susceptible to gonococcal infection, but out of the total infection people, 80% of them are found to be females. The sample for the test of gonorrhea is taken from the endocervical area in females and the urethra in a male. The sample is to be taken after two hours from the last urination.
• To collect smear in men the technicians ask them to squeeze the penis to get a good smear.
• The technician will gently insert the urogenital swab in the urethra and rotate in one for sample collection.
• For females, a sterile swab or culturette and the swab is rotated against the wall of the endocervical canal to collect the samples.
• Gram stain the smear to study.
