When mitochondria are damaged, cells undergo apoptosis, which is the mechanisms of action of several types of chemotherapy, including imatinib. Vitamin c helps to preserve the health of mitochondria; hence, a negative effect is created against these chemotherapy drugs' mechanism of actction. Desmoid tumors (aggressive fibromatosis) are not a cancer because they do not spread to other parts of the body. Often they do not grow or cause symptoms, but some desmoids can grow aggressively.

Dear lybrate-user, it is not safe to conceive when you are on imatinib. So please consult your doctor regarding the duration for which you have to take the medication. Let them assess and decide if you need to continue it, and for how long. Also discuss with them your plan for pregnancy, so they may be able to give you safer medications, if that is possible in your case. Plan pregnancy after that.

Dear lybrate-user
I can understand that disease of your husband is becoming resistant to various TKIs (Imatinib and Nilotinib), it will be useful if you can provide type of resistant he had towards these medicines. Once we know type of resistance we can either switch to other medicine like Dasatinib or can suggest you stem cell transplant.
In case of resistant disease allogenic transplant is choice of treatment. Donor could be sibling (need HLA typing and matching) or unrelated donor.

Hi,
imatinib 400 mg, as I understand, is an approved targeted therapy for front-line management of chronic myeloid leukemia (cml), success of which depends on whether or not it has been able to achieve a timely haematological response as expected. Imatinib is good so long as your disease is chronic, not advanced and is not resistant to imatinib. Your medical oncologist can best comment on the overall survival aspects, nevertheless. However, its advisable that you complement conventional care...more

This may be due to medicine effect or due to disease progression both.
Need to withhold imatinib and get bcr-abl pcr done, if this report shows a high percentage value, medicine to be changed, if not detected, imatinib dosage needs reduction further.

If BCR ABL1 transcript is positive as you have stated, then it confirms a diagnosis of CML. In that case you have to take Imatinib or other TKIs for the treatment. It cannot be ET if BCR ABL is positive.

So the final diagnosis is pre b cell all with ph positive.
I believe autologous transplant was done since you had a very good response to chemo and mrd was negative.
So I think prognosis appears good.
Please continue imatinib.

It seems like you are an otherwise healthy person, a man who is 6 ft tall and 75 kgs. Your current wbc count is normal and you are on treatment for imatinib. With regards to your prognosis of cml your oncologist should have told you about how things might turn out for you. Most blood cancers are curable, however it is best to speak with your oncologist regarding your condition or get a second opinion.
