I am Dr. Audumbar Borgaonkar, cosmetic and plastic surgeon. I am going to speak about Gynecomastia or man-boobs. It is a common cosmetic problem in males. It is an abnormal increase in the size of breast glands in males giving female-like appearance. Treatment of gynecomastia involves a surgical procedure called liposuction with gland excision. The procedure involves the removal of fat through suction through a very small incision on the chest wall. There is another small incision is made around nipple areola to remove the hard tissue which is called as gland. The procedure is daycare procedure which means that the patient gets admitted in the morning, he is operated and is discharged in the evening.

Patient can join daily activities after 2 to 3 days. Patient is required to take a course of antibiotics for 5 days along with pain killers. To get proper results patient is required to wear pressure garments for 3 to 4 months following surgery. There is no functional problem associated with the gynecomastia. It only causes psychological problems like the patient is unable to wear tight clothes or remove clothes while swimming etc. Patient is advised to avoid heavy exercises for 2 weeks after the surgery. Hair Transplant as the word suggest is a procedure in which hair from one part of the body is extracted and it is implanted in the area where it is needed. There are two main types of hair transplantation procedures. First is Follicular unit method which is also called as trip method. Second is follicular unit extraction method. Follicular unit extraction is the preferred technique. Currently since it is involved with minimum pain and it is sutureless and it has faster healing time.

Follicular unit extraction technique involves removal of singular hair follicles from donor area in random fashion and they are implanted in the recipient area. As regards age, age is not much of a concern for hair transplantation and it can be performed in younger as well as older individuals. Even females with baldness can undergo hair transplantation procedure. The results of hair transplantation are long lasting or permanent. The hair those are extracted are taken from the donor area which is called as permanent zone or DHT resistant area. So these hair are less likely to fall. In cases where there is less donor area we can harvest hair from other body areas like chest or groin region.

The hair transplantation is relatively safe procedure and it is not associated with any major side effects. In the post-operative period there may be swelling which is self limiting and it reduces over a period of 2-3 days. In post-operative period the patient is required to take a course of antibiotic followed by multivitamin tablets. Also, we provide platelet rich plasma or PRP treatment to boost hair growth.
