The presence of pus in the urine indicates an infection. The normal healthy urine should contain only 0-1 pus cell per hpf or high power field under the microscope. In women, a pus count of 2-4 per hpf is considered by their doctor as within normal. On the other hand, pus cells of 2-4 per hpf in a male could be considered already as significant, the reason behind is the fact that the urethra of the male - as compared to the short urethra of females 8-10 cm - is from 28-36 cm, thus making contamination from an external source very unlikely, thus even a less amount of pus in a male urine is already considered as infection, thus appropriate anti-microbial therapy must be instituted.
