I have muscular dystrophy and my wife has polio. I would like to know if we plan to have child. Will our baby be normal. Is there any way we can check out whether our baby will born normal or not?

Polio is caused by a viral infection and is unlikely to affect the baby. Muscular dystrophy on the other hand is a genetic disorder. Depending on what kind of dystrophy it is; the genetic association can be determined. It is important for you to see a geneticist to determine the chance of the baby being affected. To know whether the baby is affected or not there are two options: First; after conception to do tests to determine if the baby is affected and second option is to do PGD- preimplantation genetic diagnosis which involves resorting to IVF. Have detailed counselling with a fertility specialist as well as a geneticist to get the best outcome. All the best!
