Hello doctor. I have keloid on my chest. Now we are planing for pregnancy. Can I take ILS injection at this time and during pregnancy. Any side effects on the baby.

Before pregnancy you can take it but in the initial 4-5 months of pregnancy it should be avoided. Actually use of steroid in the pregnancy depends on risk and benefit ratio. And I think keloid is not that much a grave disease so it should be avoided. You can use silicone sheets though.

Hi lybrate-user! Keloids on chest is a recurrent problem. Intralesional Steroid is a good option but there is a chance it will recur after treatment. Steroids are Category B pregnany drugs, hence safe but I would advice you to pause or withhold the treatment during pregnancy with ILS. But if the keloids are too bothersome, you can combine ILS with CRyotherapy. Cryotherapy is done using liquid nitrogen. It freezes the tissue and there is no systemic (i.e. Blood) absorption, hence absolutely safe in pregnancy. You can also apply topical steroids and silicon sheets which are safe too. A multidimensional approach is always better than just one modality of treatment.
