Higher RDW values indicate greater variation in size. Normal reference range of RDW-CV in human red blood cells is 11.5-14.5%. If anemia is observed, RDW test results are often used together with mean corpuscular volume (MCV) results to determine the possible causes of the anemia. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are calculations performed by automated blood analyzers. MPV reflects the average size of platelets present in a person's sample of blood while PDW reflects how uniform the platelets are in size. Procalcitonin (PCT) is a blood test that is frequently performed if there is a suspicion that a patient may have bacterial sepsis, a severe systemic infection that can become life-threatening. The procalcitonin test is one way to make the diagnosis more quickly and potentially save lives.
