Hi my husband is 52 he was drinking 200 ml of alcohol from since 5 years everyday, he is diabetic since 10 years is on insulin 28 unit twice was taking viboliv and ursocol 450 once with vibrator, prolomet am50 and Janumet 50/1000 till march his sugar level was high 8.1 hba1c, his liver function test, lipids except triglycerides was normal, his sonogram all normal showed only grade 1 fatty liver. This condition was ok even till July, he started losing weight, and along with that his sugar level started coming to very normal 61hba1c and fasting 85 all of sudden pp 120. Then again sonogram and fibscan showed everything normal, his liver function test was quite normal so the gen physician stopped ursocol. Now in two months he has lost almost 3 kg, lot of inches, but in my back of mind I felt that something is wrong so got tested for ammonia and bun which show 80 ugdl and bun 3.2, we live in Assam which is very backwards medically, even the gastro said nothing wrong as there was not any mental confusion even ammonia was high. Then a visiting doctor suggested ct scan which indicated diffuse parenchymal changes with .portosystemic collateral in perisplenic region seen. We went to hyderabad (few minutes with Dr. Nageshwar reddy) where again a MRI was done which showed the same result as ct scan with no lesion. Doctor said his liver has 10 percent damage, condition is reversible if he does not take any alcohol. He has been advised bilefix 600 and viboliv twice along with his earlier medication. He has stopped 200 ml of scotch daily but to avoid relapse is taken 2/3 can of light beer (5/) alcohol beer alternate days and is trying to quit that also in 1 month time. Very worried is it leading to cihrossis. - [ ]

Hello lybrate-user, first of all I appreciate you for giving such detailed medical history of your husband. As on MRI fatty degeneration of liver is milder one and as said by doctor- there is been 10 % damage,This can be reversed completely if your husband stops alcohol completely and it is not going to cause cirrhosis of liver if one takes proper care such as stopping alcohol addiction completely. There are many Homeopathy medicines for fatty liver which helps to cure.

Good morning, It seems like a very complicated scenario and your attempt to describe his symptoms and problems seems to be very clear. It is very likely that cirrhosis has made his medical condition worse. I believe you need to closely monitor his kidney and liver functions and day to day activities. If in case any problems arise due to his condition becoming bad (as per your observation) he would need immediate admission. However, for now, it seems like his condition is stable on medications. If he is not able to sleep or has other withdrawal reactions from stopping or going down on the amount of alcohol, you might need to consult a psychiatrist ASAP. Look forward to hearing from you. If you need help with booking an appointment online with me on this website either text, audio or video appointment for a confidential and private consultation you may do so by contacting the help desk of Lybrate.
