Dry skin around nipple is very common and can cause soreness and sometimes even bleeding. It can be due to dryness or can be due to rubbing of clothes during running (Jogger's Nipple), which is treated by moisturiser application. If there is skin erosion it may be due to dermatitis, which may require local application of steroids. Rarely nipple ulceration could be due Paget's disease of nipple, which is a sign of cancer.
