There are many theories given for causative agent. The well accepted theory is folic acid deficiency at the time of neural time formation (very early pregnancy). Treatment depends on type of spine bifida. If it is spine bifida occulta than only observation is required with regular imaging. If it is spine bifida aperta than surgery is the usual option.
