I found some small lump in the lower lateral quadrant of my right breast. Got a ultrasound and mammography and fnac done. Its a fibroadenoma which is 22 mm in size. I am 28 years old with a family history of breast cancer. Should I get it removed or do I have to wait n get regular checkups. My doctor suggested excisional biopsy. What can be the post operative complications if I get it removed. How long do I need to take bead rest. Will it effect the breast feeding in the future. Please suggest.

Mammography is of no help .Excision biopsy of lump. You do not require any rest. It will not affect your future lactation.

We generally observe small fibroadenomas 1-3 cms, under the age of 30 if they are classical on ultrasound (without even an FNAC or core Biopsy) as they are sometimes known to resolve. After the age of 30 we do a Biopsy and observe if less than 3 cms, no atypia on core Biopsy (sometimes difficult to distinguish fibroadenoma from benign phylloides tumor) and not causing any pain or disfigurement. However if you want it removed, no objection to the same.
