If symptomatic for the gall bladder polyp, then cholecystectomy is recommended for any size of the polyp. Gall bladder polyps of size 1 cm or more are likely to harbour cancer and hence a cholecystectomy is recommended in those. In Indian patients or those with thickened wall 4 mm, sessile polyp, gall stones, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, age >50 and single polyp, we recommend cholecystectomy for 6-9 mm also as the risk of cancer is higher in those. Polyps less than 5 mm are usually observed with ultrasound at 6 months, 1 year and then yearly till 5 years. Any increase in the size of 2 mm or more on ultrasound is an indication for cholecystectomy. If you want to share your reports and discuss this further, feel free to contact me directly.
