Rapid antibody test ? gives a positive result based on antibodies to HIV, not the virus itself. It takes your body up to 3 months to produce these antibodies at levels that can be detected by this test. 4-6 weeks (up to 3 months) after infection, most people will have enough antibodies to test positive. A nucleic acid test (NAT) can usually tell you if you are infected with HIV 10 to 33 days after an exposure. An antigen/antibody test performed by a laboratory on blood from a vein can usually detect HIV infection 18 to 45 days after an exposure. The Rapid test is just as accurate as a Standard HIV test. If you test negative, then you do not require any further tests. The Standard HIV test detects HIV antibodies in the blood. As with the Rapid test, most guys (about 90%) will develop enough HIV antibodies to be detected three to four weeks after infection. The window period is time between potential exposure to HIV infection and the point when the test will give an accurate result. During the window period a person can be infected with HIV and be very infectious but still test HIV negative. The window period for a 4th generation antigen/antibody test is four weeks.
