My son has cough which comes and goes. If I get medicines, he will be ok for some days but then it comes back again. I have been to multiple ends and changed medicines over the course of time, but nothing seems to help. Should I get some tests / xray to confirm an infection or an underlying issue? Please help, I feel helpless and cannot see him like this.

Recurrent cough usually signifies either Allergy with bronchospasm (Asthma) or chronic infections. Would need blood tests CBP, ESR, AEC, CHEST XRAY, Sputum for Gm stain and AAFB if he is bringing up phlegm. Might need lung function test if above normal.
