The thalassemia is a hereditary disorder of hemoglobin. But all of us have 2 Gene for hemoglobin production. So even if one is damaged, if other one is normal, then hemoglobin production remains normal. Obviously blood test reveals that abnormal hemoglobin, which is reported as thalassemia trait or carrier. But since he or she is carrying one normal Gene also, he or she is perfectly alright. Now in offspring, the two genes are contributed by father and mother, one Gene from each. So there is 50% chance of having normal baby and 50% chance of having baby with thalassemia carrier, which is again completely normal, without requiring any treatment. Hope it helps.
