Most probably she got Osteoarthritis of the knee. you must go for X-RAYS both knees A-P and Lateral views in standing position. After seeing the x-ray we can decide the management of the complain as per the stage of arthritis.Â

Hello Mr. Basak 60+ female is an old-young adult who experience a glimpse of old age physical concerns. Severe joint pain can be due to innumerable(many) reasons. Before you decide the plan of action iI recommend you a small check list: Is her posture and biomechanical alignment correlating to COG(is she in near normal human activity - ergonomic. posture) e. g. Has she stooped forward, or side ways. Does she walk in a shuffle gait? Does she recruit her hip muscles effectively to walk? Does she experience rubbing/cutting of slippers/chappal from one side more.? Did she had recent fall/loss of balance? Does she keep her knees together too tightly while sitting in car /sofa? Correlate those and show your wife to any physio. Also x-rays do help in understanding the joint from within, Be ALERT, AWARE AND ASSESSED. REGARDS DR. VIVEK KAKKAR/sofaÂ

The most common condition of knee pain at her age is Osteoarthritis. But other conditions like injury or meniscal tear need not be ruled out. If the pain has been from long time usually months, then an X-ray of her knees can help evaluate initial stage.Â
Ask Free Question
Considering her age it is surely osteoarthritis. Xrays of both knees standing will decide the line of treatment.Â

Along with the above advise you should start her on physiotherapy to increase the strength of the surrounding muscles and to avoid making the knee stiff... Also get an X ray of both the knees done in standing position to know the amount of damage or arthritis of the knee...Â
