Lybrate-user, Lithium is a preferred medication of choice for bipolar affective disorder. Dosage is adjusted and a plasma level of 0.6-1.2 mmol/ L is maintained for optimum effect. Now antidepressants (such as zyvenod especially has been known to tip the mood in bipolar depression and not advised to treat bipolar depression mainly because of the risk of precipitating a manic episode. A combination of olanzapine and fluoxetine has been recommended by NICE guidelines. I would recommend a thorough assessment by a psychiatrist including full review of past history and current symptoms before deciding on best course of action.
