My son (13 years) has been diagnosed with bipolar depression. He is having this problem for last 2 years, but has been diagnosed 4 months ago. He is on medication. He is not going school for last 4 months, not ready to study at home n had severe phobia for studies n exams. Tried all methods but no counselling is working for him. Not only studies but other aspects of life are also affected. He has a great phobia of ?IF?. Like if I will fail the exams, if this will happen, that will happen n so on. He is very much stressed about future results. Understands the situation but when it comes to studies or going school he gets panicked n feels helpless. After that he has guilt feelings also for not going to school. I have checked other aspects also but he says that it?s all about studies. He had been a brilliant student. 2 years ago v moved to Gurugram. He scored well in exams except one subject (due to festival n family gathering). And teacher passed on a comment regarding less marks.

This is a very early manifestation of bipolar and therefore it is very serious. You must persevere and do some handholding to make functional. If he does not do his normal chores, his condition can only deteriorate. Apart from the medication he needs to go for emotional therapy and deal with his anger in particular. If there are genetic reasons for his condition and any childhood experiences that contributed to his condition, he needs to deal with that in therapy. When the anger is turned inwards, he will become depressed and when it is turned outwards he can become manic. He will tend to have mood swings too. He must be put on a tight schedule and monitored very carefully. He may have a lot of fear of rejection and failure. He needs a concerning but firm hand.
