My Glomerular Filtration Rate is 78. I am 63 years old. How much is my kidney damaged & what medication should I take to bring it to 90? I'm diabetic. My fasting glucose is 162 whereas it should be around 100. The blood test was taken when I was a bit feverish with body pain due to diabetic effect.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. When a person has diabetes for many years, it does damage multiple organs including kidneys. This is particularly more so if blood glucose is not well controlled. Ideally fasting glucose should be < 100 mg, PP 150 to 170 mg & HbA1c% < 6.8. If this is not maintained, then there is a progressive reduction in kidney efficiency. That results in reduction of GFR. Therefore, it is essential to achieve a strict glucose control. Thanks.
