You can start using pills or lUCD after three months after delivery if there has been no problem during or after delivery. Birth control pills have to be taken regularly without fail. The low-dose pills have hardly any side effects such as break-through bleeding, mild headache, mild weight gain which usually disappear with time. Failure of contraception may occur. With IUCD and injections there may be spotting or bleeding, painful periods and excessive bleeding during menses. The IUCD may fall off. The side effects may become less as time passes. Regular check-ups to see that IUCD is in place are necessary. But overall side-effects are tolerable and benefits far outweigh the side-effects.
