What is the incubation period of H pylori? Can dental work cause it? If the bacteria is ingested, how much time it takes to cause infection and gi symptoms in susceptible patients? Can it cause gastritis in just one single day if it has to or it lives in the gi tract for many years before it causes any symptoms?

Helicobacter pylori, also known as H. pylori, is a bacterium that is commonly found in the stomach. It is present in approximately one-half of the world's population. The vast majority of people infected with H. pylori has no symptoms and will never develop problems. However, H. pylori is capable of causing a number of digestive problems, including ulcers and, much less commonly, stomach cancer. It is not clear why some people with H. pylori get these conditions and others do not. If you have an ulcer, you should be tested for H. pylori, and if found to be infected, you should be treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics are the new cure for ulcers; therapy is 1-2 weeks of one or two antibiotics and a medicine that will reduce the acid in the stomach.
