Normally the colon contains air and stool, both of which expand the inside of the colon. A collapsed colon means that there is almost no air or stool in the large intestine. When a doctor sees a collapsed colon on an x-ray or ct scan, the first thought is the presence of a small bowel obstruction. A collapsed sigmoid colon indicates there is virtually no feces or air inside this section of intestine. The sigmoid colon is an s-shaped part of the large intestine that connects to the rectum. The sigmoid colon usually contains air and feces which expand the inside of the colon.
