My son is 21 years old. At the age of 15 due to hair fall approached doctor and went for t3, t4,tsh and the test came out as hypo thyroid. Since then he has been using 75 mcg eltroxin medicine. After usage the readings are now in within the range. Does he need to use this life long? What are the problems if discontinue? Pls advise sir?

Hi, Hypothyroidism is a hormone deficiency disease. Thyroid gland is not producing adequate quantity of thyroxine, hence all the symptoms. This hormone is required every day for normal metabolic activities, maintaining body temperature, normal brain functioning, and many other vital functions. Since there is lack of it, there is a need for supplementing the hormone daily for lifetime. If not then all the symptoms of hypothyroidism will come back. Thanks.

He has to take medicine indefinitely as his body is not getting enough thyroid hormone which is necessary for getting energy.
