Hello sir/ ma?am my mother is a bp patient since 9 years. She has been prescribed telma 20 by the doctor. Since few days I have noticed that whenever I take her blood pressure reading in the evening it shows an irregular heartbeat for once and after that it?s normal. I have heard that irregular heartbeat is not good for heart. My question is that why is it so that her heartbeat is irregular for one reading and that to in the evening and it comes back to normal in the next reading. Is it a matter of concern.

Irregular heartbeat is quite common with increasing age and in hypertensive patients. Some drinks like tea, coffee, alcohol can also cause irregular heartbeat. This irregular heartbeat can be due to extra heart beat (commonly due to atrial extra systole or ventricular extra systole, or atrial fibrillation) sometimes atrial or ventricular extra systole are benign. But atrial fibrillation are things to be worried as they can cause stroke leading to paralysis. Ecg and holter is recommended to understand the cause of irregular heartbeat.
