If you have underlying kidney disease or known kidney problem and if you are using fluconazole, which is one of the most commonly used oral anti fungal tablet, then you need to inform your doctor about it. In kidney disease, the dose of fluconazole is reduced so that no further kidney damage occurs. The most common side effects of fluconazole are headache, nausea and pain in stomach. High doses of fluconazole can cause kidney damage. Long term use of antifungal tablets in high dose is harmful for liver and if taken for more than 6 months, can cause liver failure. Hence it is advisable to use only the minimum required dose of anti fungal tablets and fr a short duration only, and under strict supervision of a doctor.
