Had two episodes of psychosis in nov 2014 and feb 2016. Took risperidone for 5 months then shifted to asprito 5 mg. Is there any bad effects of this medicine during pregnancy and will there be any defect in baby after birth?

Asprito in human pregnancy data is limited that it crosses placenta or not. In animals it shows teratogenic effect means can cause damage to the fetus in animals. Though hundred percent not sure but we preferred resperidone, olanzapine or haloperidol in pregnancy as they are relatively safe during pregnancy. Meet with your psychiatrist and either ask for lowest possible dose of asprito. Or change it with resperidone, haloperidol or olanzapine.

Risperidone is pregnancy category c. Which means use if benefits outweigh the risks. Same for asprito. There are not enough studies to say that the drug is safe during pregnancy. Having said that mental health of mother during and after pregnancy is of utmost importance. So many a times medication is necessary and you should consult a psychiatrist for the same. Hope this helps. All the best!
