My uncle was detected with hepatitis b in 2001. He was seriously ill for one month. But later he recovered. Last week he had to undergo a minor surgery. His blood test showed hepatitis b. Earlier, no one in my family had any knowledge on this disease. But now everyone is panicked. Some are saying, there is no cure for it. As of now, he is perfectly alright. It seems that the virus is dormant. Is there any treatment for it? Would starting any antiviral therapy like entecavir break the dormancy of the virus? What should we do now. Last month, one close relative of us died due to cirrhosis (after infecting with hepatitis b). Please advise me.

Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by a virus (called the hepatitis B virus, or HBV). It can be serious and there's no cure, but the good news is it's easy to prevent. You can protect yourself by getting the hepatitis B vaccine and having safer sex. Treatment for chronic hepatitis B may include Antiviral medications. Several antiviral medications ? including entecavir (Baraclude), tenofovir (Viread), lamivudine (Epivir), adefovir (Hepsera) and telbivudine (Tyzeka) ? can help fight the virus and slow its ability to damage your liver.
